New imprved windows security ...

... well we can always hope.

New box, new win XP SP2 install, connect to net to get security patches etc. and before they have downloaded something infects the new box so now I go back to square one because there's no way I'm going to use a dodgy base even before I add all my stuff on top of it.

You need a router really, in effect an external firewall that will prevent an attack on such a system.

Check your router hasn't got uPnP running or active, it's easily hijacked to redirect users. You thought you we're going to the Windows update site, think again. You could install AV from a USB fob before connecting - that helps.

This was through a router! Albeit one where I've never really trusted it's firewall. I think the problem was that using ie to google for security problems before before doing all the patches dumped me on a page which then exploited one of those security problems (probably a malicious script carried through port 80 so the router firewall wouldn't have been intelligent enough to stop it)

So partly my fault for trusting windows before patching it. Now I'm doing the whole process again from scratch and not going anywhere until its patches are up to date.

(still annoyed though!)

If it's a recent hack of a vulnerability found after SP2 then there's not a lot you can do about it save going straight to Windows Update.
