new isp

He hasn't been paying for the interney connection either (for at least 2 months from the size of the amount they are demanding)

I did offer to him that since he was on a contract to pay the lot, I'd pay him for the service until he moved into a place where he could transfer it to. but it looks like that is pointless, there's an overdue bill and they are cutting it off at the end of the month. Paying off the rest of the 18 month contract he signed (that may well now be useless to him) is now his problem.

So, I need to pick me an ISP. I don't need a massively fast connection, I do need a fair amount of bandwidth. we don't use a tv, so use other services to access programming. Obviously, cost is far more of an issue than 100% reliability, although I'd like something a bit better than my previous experience with tiscali (dns down for most of every weekend)

I'm skeptical of unlimited services, although I'm happy to accept one as long as their traffic shaping/fair use policy dosen't knock me back to dialup speeds for the rest of the day for having the temerity to watch something on you-tube.

bandwidth use i'm looking at is probably about 40gb a month.

any advice on who to look at?

We are with these guys. They are pretty good both service-wise and customer-service wise and if you decide to take other services from them you get a cumulative discount.

iv'e already agreed to keep the bt line and the existing gas/electric supplier, so that probably isn't going to help me much.

I'm with F2S and have been entirely happy.

They are still a good ISP, even without the other stuff. We started off just with the internet and as we've moved we've put more and more stuff with them.

20 quid a month for unlimited transfer on a 16 meg line looks too good to be true though, i wonder what sort of limiters they put on that.
Barefoot Andrew

I'm paying £19.99/month for 8Mbs and 20Gb/month - plenty for my needs. My line typically runs about 7.5Mbs (just checked) - sadly no 16Mbs capacity at my local exchange Sad Yet.

is that a 20gb a month limit they have set, or what you are using?

i don't see the point in a 16meg line speed, I've never maxed out an 8.
Stacey

NOT Pipex - they're rubbish.

That's what they've set. I've never used more than 25% of that capacity - I sometimes transfer huge files about for work, routinely stream radio, but don't stream video very often.

16Mbs would be enough for multiple members of a household to stream video simultaneously - comfortably. It'll be of those things you wondered how you managed without it once you have it - I'm well used to an 8Mbs connection and couldn't conceive of going back to a mere 2.

Oh, and you get 1Mbs upload with a 16Mbs connection. I'd buy it for that reason alone.

If you are keeping your connection with BT then you might be better off with BT as your ISP....especially if there are some issues with payment logged to your address

Think our BT bill is £25/month but by not using the phone until 6pm that includes all our calls and internet and everything.

I know some people hate them, and I wasn't too impressed with the idea at first, but we've recently had good service and the connection is stable

which is therefore no use to me as i use 40/month as a minimum. I could easily go over that if i wasn't careful.
Barefoot Andrew

Not sure off-hand, but I don't think they stop downloads beyond the metered limit, they just start charging you per Gb. Plus, 1am-6am is unmetered if that helps.

I suggest giving them a call to discuss requirements.

I'm happy with BT too. I've had a couple of glitches during the last 2-3 years, but considering how much people rage about cheaper suppliers I think BT are OK. My last quarter's phone bill was £102 for basic broadband, line rental and all calls, which was over £30 less than the previous one without me having changed my calling habits (though I think I may have sold my soul to them for the next 500 years when the renewal date came up Rolling Eyes ). Cheapest in cash terms isn't necessarily best.
