New Pi

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-3-on-sale/

This has wifi and bluetooth, still only 1gb ram though.

the wifi/bluetooth should make it much better for a lot of projects .

at some point i am going to have a play,i still have a rather daft idea for "coursing"competitions for salukis and lurchers , a semi autonomous off road lure seems necessary and the darpa stuff is mostly too big (and expensive).

Sounds like single use tech.
dpack

that might depend on the body shell and robust potting of the electrics and good mechanicals ,a kevlar jacket might help Rolling Eyes

although a disposable fun fur cover might be a good option ,pink rabbit by the kong company has taken damage but has lasted remarkably well considering the dreadful things they have done to it and that seems to be made with a strong but "ordinary" fibre cloth.

What exactly is it that you want it to do?
I am guessing to run away as intelligently as possible, in which case I'd suggest you have the dogs wear some kind of transmitter on their collars to make it easy to detect where they are coming from...

yep ,fast (40 to 50 mph top speed)

swervey ,jumpy, very tight turms and 180 turns without losing too much momentum

clever enough to know when to jump and evade at close range

and it has to be good in a field as well as robust enough to survive being caught

the remote control part can deal with start and get tired as well as limiting top speed for different abilities of hound

if i do work it out, both in terms of what it needs to do and how to make it do it, i recon it would be a far nicer game than racing on a track ,an acceptable way to work hounds so long as the course is hound safe(that will always have issues but they can be minimised) and an ace opportunity for betting, tv rights etc etc .

i recon i have a fair bit of thought to do before trying to design the lure.

Okay, based on your desired abilities I've knocked a little something up:
