New site to be tested might even be of use to the IT geeks!

http://dns.myff.org/

Be aware the cosmetics are not at all done yet, and the free DNS service might let you manage records but it not going to be plugged in to make it live until after the skills sharing weekend.

The domain tester though does work and I think is quite a lot of fun, you will need to register to use it, and there is a very small $5 a year subscription for some of its features.

Hold off if you are using Internet Explorer, bust as ever.

Fixed. Have I ever mentioned I hate internet explorer?

I am quite pleased with this in a geeky way.

It is Web2.0 stuff coded with the usual php and javascript. But as an added twist once a domain test is started there are no database connections made and very little processing in php. Instead a flurry of little c programs are called which do the actual work with what should be far less resource and greater speed than php.

Good luck with this Very Happy

Looking a lot better now, and the domain testing has to be the best i have seen by a mile.

Are the C progs of your own design?

Well yes and no. I habitually refuse to write anything from scratch.

In this case case i grabbed check_soa. c a program with some basic ability to grab SOA records and with a few functions in it to parse some bits of DNS records.

As a program check_soa.c knew nothing of A,CNAME,MX records and lacked even the ability to parse multiple records from a result....

It is now a sub 30kb executable that will fork itself into the background, deal with the odd way php needs to call it, and will both get the records and return html formatted explanations of what can be garnered from the records like what format the serials are in.

Sounds good. Actually I think one of our team wrote a multi threaded DNS tool in c#, or cobbled one together, which we never rolled out. I wonder if we still have the source code...

Good and now as of today the site is officially open.

All it is really lacking is a geographically seperate nameserver and that will sorted in a couple of days I am quite hopeful on this site as free dns and free domain testing are services I use myself and here it is done better than the places I was using Smile

You must set the ad_network_ads_377.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).
