new to turkeys

How seriously should I be concerned about keeping my hens away from my new turkeys? I have read all the warnings about blackhead but know of others who run hens and turkeys together with no problems! All advice gratefully received.
Jamanda

Alison might be able to advise on this, she keeps both.

I run my chickens and turkeys together. I wouldn't pen them up together, but they all have a reasonably large space to free range in. They also have separate sleeping accommodation, and I quarantine the turkeys for a fortnight when they arrive.

We had blackhead last year.

They proberbly had it when they arrived with us, but you can't prove it completely.

Although they were housed separately the turkeys were on land that had previously had chickens.

I wouldn't do it again like that. It cost me too much last year.

This year the turkeys are having new poultry land.

Were all the birds affected and did any recover?
alison

about half died.

proberbly of the remainder half were ill.

Once they were medicated they perked up, and began to look good in the last 2 weeks of life, long after the withdrawal period
judith

That is bad luck. I can see why you don't want to take any risks again.

I've not come across (sheep/cattle) farmers here who do poultry as well [for own consumption/seasonal sideline] that would keep chickens and turkeys together. Because of blackhead. FWIW.

I thought that the previously approved medication was now unavailable.

Are they still edible after medication?
gil

After the withdrawal period for whatever medication you've givem themn
alison

We had to sign to say we agreed to the "previously registered for turkey" medication being given, although it was no longer licenced for turkeys.
