NewcomerHello you amazing Downsizer folk!! Found this site purely by chance whilst researching scythes and their uses via Google results ... no I'm not looking for a new life as a Grim Reaper, just want to find a better way to look after/deal with grass and unwanted species (aka weeds!) in a small rented field in a location where most of the farmers don't want to know if it's less than the size of a small county!
Am now hooked on all sorts of other diverse threads and my OH will be insisting we get separate computers so he can continue building his web site.
Will be badgering Gil very soon for advice on said scythes...

Welcome to the site. A piece of advice - don't get dragged into playing mafia in The Games Room if your husband needs his computer at all, ever.

Hello!
You've spotted one of Gil's peroccupations already I see. She's not alone though, prepare for in depth discussions of the correct angle of blade...

Welcome from slightly down south of you - nice to have someone else in the North West corner - we are a bit thin on the ground over here - they all hang out in Wales and the South West

Wow, thanks for your warm welcomes!! Sean, I am near Grange over Sands in South Cumbria and after some exceptional weather for the last few days we have reverted to the norm for this county - wild, wet and windy! Hi Jocorless in Morecambe too, we can usually see Lancashire across the Bay ... but not today!

Ahh you can usually see us from Grange - Great butchers over there - Stunning pork pies and sausage rolls - My hubbie is a postie and sometimes does the Grange run and always comes home with pork products!

Hi there and welcome, Katie !
Was your OH at the West Country Scythe Fest last weekend ? If it wasn't him, that means there are other scythe folk near you.
Nice to see someone from Cumbria - helps redress the balance with Wales !
Feel free to pick brains re scythes in the Land Management section

Greetings from the Thames Valley, and another scyther
I bought mine a looong time ago, and think they are brilliant. You can judge heights (eg to miss the harvest mice nests) or scalp the ground, etc.
Mine is a called a Turk scythe, I don't know why. It's not as long-bladed as some, and has a green metal shaft. It goes quite fast sometimes, but usually likes to just take her time.
The trickiest part for me, was knowing how to sharpen it. It has taken all these years, and I could still do better
Hope you enjoy it here, and your scythe too.

Wecome from another settler in Wales...so glad the rest of the country is filling up with members...we might get less stick for living in such a beautiful place, where the sun always shines and money trees grow by the lemonade springs...... and scything was demonstrated by gil...weren't we lucky...we have it all

Hi Katie,
Welcome to a great place.
Another (L plate) scyther here.
Had a go during Gil's demo at last year's Skill-sharing w/e and completely converted, the strimmer hasn't seen the light of day since, and won't.

welcome! I'm not one of the welsh lot, despite having welsh parents
I love Cumbria and many years ago used to work in Keswick, as an actor at the theatre which has now been replaced by the theatre by the lake..took my Oh up there for his first visit in 2003 and he's desperate to go back, however it's a tad far away from the south coast!!
Oooh..Ive just had an idea.....I wonder if it would be feasible to run a downsizer house exchange thingy?? You know, like the home exchange sites?.....hmmmmmmm

Isn't Grange over Sands where the posh folk live? Welcome. I used to live at one time or other in Lancaster, Morecambe and Whitehaven. Grange is a nice place. Have you done the across the estuary walk?

More lovely 'welcomes', for which thank you all again!
I'm only close to Grange-over-Sands ... actually about 4 miles to the west in Cark (the 'poor relation' to Cartmel just up the road!) Small world Boisdevie1 - my OH is from Cleator Moor and was born in Whitehaven Hospital (that shows his age!) Done & enjoyed the cross bay walk only once but occasionally walkour dogs or ride the horse over to Chapel Island in another part of Morecambe Bay, tides permitting!
Scythe is on order & looking forward to some experimental hay making next month (that'll make it rain!)

What kind of scythe / blade did you order, Katie ?
Feel free to post any questions..
I went to Cartmel Races once, many years ago, and the Priory with all those amazing carved symbolic gravestones
