Not in my book :(I wondered if anyone thought these might be Lactarius tabidus? My book is not helpful on this occasion. Found in my garden amongst the nameless woodchip.

I can see that you are trying to post some pix, (I removed a square bracket to show this).
But I can't see the pictures!
Are they in a public area?
EDIT: something strange here. I can get to the first one directly, and then I can see it. But others are "forbidden" ??

I cannot see them either - just little blue boxes on my screen

Can't see enough of the pictures to tell you, I'm afraid. What colour is the milk?

I can see them OK ... trying something different now. Thanks for the heads-up!

Think it's cos you are logged in to that site and we aren't, Loz, do they have a "public" or "send to a friend" album section?

I am a bit stumped by this - more so than actually identifying the mushroom!
Not to worry - thanks everyone for the interest, anyhow ... guess I need to get MORE MUSHROOM BOOKS instead!
Yaay!

You can attach pics to your post though...

All of a sudden, I can see three pics... Don't look like Lactarius tabidus. Nothing much like it at all. Do a spore print, and just cut the gills a bit to see if it bleeds milk. If it doesn't bleed milk, check against the description for wood blewits, which they kind of resemble. There's a couple of other possibilities.

I fink eye fixshed it, guv
I am not sure what a spore print is Please forgive my ignorance!
I cut off some of the gills and nothing oozed out at all.
It smells quite strong - "mushroomy" and sweet. Is smell a good indicator of edibility? Is edibility a word? LOL.

I'm with Cab here, they could possibly be wood blewits. Pop one gills-down on a bit of white paper overnight and see if you get a salmon-pink spore print (pattern on the paper where the spores drop out of the gills).

Nettie I think the one that I picked was simply too wet to do this properly. The "print" I got was too wet to really call salmon-pink. It was rather ... er, um ... is "sludgy" a colour?
