not kindlingFeeling very proud of myself, I've managed to turn someting that's not just fit for kindling.
My first goblet, not brilliant but at least it looks a bit like I intended it to.

Not kindling indeed - I think it is lovely.
what sort of wood is it ?

Not sure, it might be sycamore, just a piece out of the wood pile that was the right size and didn't have any splits in it.

Really lovely! That natural colouration is great, it looks like a painted effect. I like it a lot. :O)

Thank you, I think the photo makes it look better than it really is, you can't see rough edges and ridges. But I've only had the lathe a couple of weeks and so far made perfectly good firewood into shavings and fancy kindling. It felt good tonight to achieve something recognisable.
My son said I should colour the bobbly spindles I'd made and sell it as Christmas kindling.

Ignore your son. I suspect it is sycamore, it gets that grey marking when it dries flat. Goblets are not easy to do when you are just starting, people tend to make the stems too thick, worried they'll snap. Your shaping is excellent. Only one thing, make the foot about 2/3rds the diameter of the top. Measuring any wine glass or goblet and you will find that that is the sizing. (I know, you will now find one that isn't )
Nice to see that you aren't just going for bowls as many new turners do. Keep 'em coming.
This forum has an excellent lathe section. Well worth joining up. They took me under their wing when I started 2 years ago and were really helpful.

Wow! That's really impressive. I'm going to come round to yours and nick your kindling if that's only an OK example of what you can do!

I'm feeling quite embarrassed now.
I was following the instructions in a book and just tried to make it look like the picture. It's a bit shorter than it should have been because of some catches when I thought I nearly had it right. The base isn't quite right but having nearly messed it up a couple of times I decided to stop while the going was good.
Thanks for the link Pete I'll have a browse when I've done the serious things I turned the computer on for.
Have you really only been turning for two years, your stuff's fantastic, don't think I'll get that good. At the moment it's just try something and see how it turns out not plan anything in advance.
