Yep, us too from the 25th. There's some stuff in there that would make a brilliant present for the ex-hubby Very Happy

I'm really quite amazed to see a hot smoker mass marketed. Shocked Makes it harder to be eccentric if stuff hits the main stream Very Happy

Well, some of the items look ok and are very cheap. Has anyone been to Lidls to get the specials in the past? It says "while stocks last", is this going to be a few days or 10 minutes after they open?
Lloyd

I've never been to Lidl....what is the product quality like if prices are so low?...I mean, ...a salmon fly rod that is also ok with trout or char......for £30.00.....Surely it must be absolute C**P?......Or someone tell me their stuff is bargain basement.....Otherwise I'll believe otherwise.
Treacodactyl

I saw that as well MM. The thing is price is not always a good guide these days, sometimes I bought a top of the range expensive item so it will last but it breaks after a few weeks, and other times I get a cheap item for a single task and it's going strong after several years. Confused

I often look at the advertising, and think X item is paying xzillion for advertising therefore must be cheap and nasty in reality. Sometimes there may be economies of scale that justify advertsing, but often the logic works.
Jonnyboy

I bought the lures which seem fine, I've caught mackeral on the telescopic rod before with no problems but now have proper boat rods.

The smoker is a good size, the only reason I haven't bought on is that I already have a smaller one so can't justify spending twenty quid.

Stuff looks Ok to me.
Treacodactyl

I'm interested but althought I've fished a bit when I was a nipper I don't know much. So:

Only the boat rod mentions it's for sea fishing. I would think it would be fine for pier as well as boat fishing but are the other rods only for fresh water?

Would the trout rod be reasonable for a beginner? There are a few reservoirs nearby that do trout fishing and lessons so would this rod get me by untill I decide what I want or as a back up if a good rod failed?

Do these offers come round every year?

Many thanks for any help. Very Happy

i can't be certain about non food items at lidl but lidl is a mainstream store in germany and carries all the normal german brands. germany is MUCH cheaper to live in than the uk which may explain a lot of the price differences. we've always shopped at lidl whenever we can (we now live a comfortable walking distance from one so shop there regularly)

a lot of their food is better quality than even major uk brands and cheaper! the alcohol is very good, the ameretto and cherry brandy i will definately vouch for... we've had a few non food items with no problems at all so it's worth a shot!

i'm thinking i'll pick up the tackle box next week if my store gets any, it will make an excellent sewing box Very Happy

I have to say anything non foodwise I have bought from LIDL has been good quality so far and that includes fishing accessories, torches, shoes and kids pj's ,kids paints etc
But the stuff goes very very quickly here, so be prepared to miss out if you dont go early .

i've never fished that often in my life and quite frankly i tend to get bored after half an hour BUT i found that when i used a trace (or at least that's what i was told it was called) i became very enthusiastic...

the 'trace' is a fishing line with 5 hooks on it that you attach like you would just the one hook. my first try i reeled in 3 fish within 1 minute, my second time i had 5 but one wiggled free before i could reel them in! now that's what i call results!

of course it matters where and when you're fishing but i found it much more exciting when i could get a meals worth in one go Wink

If you were buying some kit for a child, what would be good to start with.

Its important to realise that simply being offered by Lidl guarantees you nothing whatsoever about the quality. Most things I've tried were OK, but there certainly is some dross, however there are more gems than one might reasonably expect.
Its usually worthwhile having a look... mistakes are rarely expensive there!
alison

what would you recommend then dougal.

Yeah! and us "frenchies" are getting none of it look, Like garden gnomes & Pyjamas - what's that all about?

http://www.lidl.fr/fr/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20050530.index

I could do with some good fishing tackle aswell

Lidl is German isn't it? Nearer to me than to you so we should be getting all the best stuff first surely?

P.s. Sorry Jonnyboy, I aren't ignoring your earlier reply to the "new kitchen garden forum" topic. In fact I am working on examples right now (between posts) I hope to put together a mock web page of what the results might bring just to give an idea. Takes time tho'
Treacodactyl

The fishing stuff is back in the UK stores from next Monday, 31/03/2008.

For the price I don't have any complaints about the fishing equipment I bought previously and, if we can, will try and get another 2.4m sea fishing rod & real for £14.99.

They also have a 9 LED headlight for £2.99 which could be tempting...
dougal

There's lots of fishing stuff, but, y'know, I don't think they've ever offered the smoke box in (at least in this part of) mainland UK.
My continuing thanks to Jonnyboy for sending one over.

Cold smoking is the really eccentric thing to do. You have to keep the bally things in for hours if not days. Hot smokers are for common people, thats why I've got one. Laughing

Poor fishing tackle shop that pays rates and stays open 360 days a year. Crying or Very sad

Fair point and it's something I have thought about, although being quite far from the sea there isn't a local tackle shop near me and I'd probably look to buy a few bits online otherwise.
sean

Though LIDL pay rates and stay open all year too. Living here I'd go to a specialist if I wanted fishing kit because I could probably get some advice at the same time. It's a bit trickier for potential sea anglers based in Tooting or somewhere though.

Buy from a specialist when you get to the area Idea

I've thought of that as well. We are likely to go very early in the morning when they're not open. Plus, living far from the sea when we do visit we want to spend as much time actually doing something rather than shopping.

I also admit there's also the matter of cost £15 for a rod, reel and line.

Its good, no, its damn good, for fish.
A handful of sawdust gives about 20 minutes or so of smoke.
Its an outdoor thing for certain, the vent/knob doesn't even try to seal it shut.
Control is by guessing, based on whether or not, or how much, smoke comes out of the knob/vent. I haven't played games with teabags instead of sawdust or part-smoking, part-indoor-roasting meats. I mean to.
But, even for fish alone, worthwhile, I'd say.

i don't know about their fishing gear, but their computer equipment is good. i got an excellent external hard drive and a remarkable self charging wireless mouse when the new Lidl opened here last year. no problems with them yet, and they were very cheap. food was good too - even selling organic veg.
