Wine box re-use.

We now buy some of our wine in boxes, but I was very frustrated that I couldn't figure out how to re-use the bags inside. Just can't get the taps to come off! But I had a bit of a brain wave. The cardboard outers if cut down vertically to the tap hole and up again make really good holders for all my OH's big envelopes for his business receipts. The bag can be cut open at the tap end, washed out, and then I took a squat plastic wine bottle, covered it with the shiny plastic bag, and then made a fleece bag to go over that with a strap. I now have a pretty good insulated water carrier for walks. I am also looking at cutting the bags up into thin rings and using the plastic to crochet little purses.

I reuse ours. I drink the contents and in a drunken stupor rip out the bag, blow it up, shove it under my shirt then put the box on over my head and self declare "I'm a fat ugly, b&stard" (one and half out of three isn't bad).

I thought it was just me who did that.

I used to use them for "one shot" photo chemicals (worked very well).
Unless the design has changed you can get the tap out by wedging a blunt blade (edge of a large spoon) between the black tap bit and the clear plastic bit. Takes a bit of patience but does come out.

I've done that. Quite good to keep the air out too, stops things oxidising if thats a problem.

I haven't bought a box of wine in years, but if the liners are still silvery plastic, then you could use them instead of loose-tea packet liners to make mackerel feathers.

...I'm with Kevin on this, you can get into them, its just hard work. Wedge a flat headed screw driver in between the tap and the clear plastic bit which is integral with the bag. Give it a twist, then move it on. It takes a while and you can only do it a few times before you loose the seal.

We used them as water carriers and seats while camping.
If you can get into it, the obvious thing to use it for is cider or wine.

wine bottles are easier to re-use - so you could buy wine in bottles .... Rolling Eyes

But, in France, and possibly Bulgaria, it's cheaper, more convenient and the wine can be better when bought in draft. I get mine in Calais for around 20 Euro for 10 litres, and it's better than most bottled stuff at 5 times the price.

Recycling glass bottles takes a lot of energy. If you buy in boxes, apart from the interior you can burn or compost the cardboard.

I said they were easier to re-use not to recycle..

I got loads of home made wine in bottles and i think it too less energy to bottle than getting that wretched stopper out of pre used wine boxes!!

I use the same bottles again and again...

so no need for them to go near any recycling plant unless I drop one!

I have been able to get "fresh" boxes and bags here which is great if you do big batches of wine and quicker than bottles.

yeah i to use new 1 or 2 gallon wine boxes and bung a demijohn or two of wine into them straight into them for wine i will drink fairly new.
Wine for long term storage goes in the glass bottles.

I make my wine in 5 gall batches - then as soon as finished fermenting rack fine clear and rack into 1 gall demijohn for a few months storage before going into either wine boxes for immediat consumption or bottles for those that want longer storage.
