[obligatory answer to any OS question follows] Linux
If I had to have windows, I'd buy a system without an OS and put XP on it.
If I had to make the choice as offered then windows 7.

I can't think of any reason why people would want vista now.

For what you need to do, Pookie, I would consider sticking Ubuntu on it. Or asking me to

But if you are going down the Windows route - Windows 7 definitely - Do not go anywhere near the disaster that Vista is

I wouldn't go down the XP route now - I think Windows 7 is a really good strong successor to XP - I think it would be a backward step to stick XP on a new pc

Agreed - it would have to be W7.
I'm going to disagree with Chez and say W7 is (IMHO) better suited to your needs than Ubuntu - simply because it'll be that much more familiar to you.

In that case I'd suggest a dual boot linux / windows.

Why complicate things?

Because that's what tech heads do?
Or in my case it's because I need apps in both environments but haven't got around to setting up wine.

The upside of having an ubuntu-only machine is that one's children can't borrow it to play Windows-platform games on it ...

My hope PC runs Ubuntu, with Windows 7 available via VirtualBox: good enough for things which insist on Windows, but not enough oomph for gaming.

what!!
I only get things if someone writes it down for me, step by step, then hand-holds me through the 1st time, and then is on call when I get stuck. After that I'm ok. Is that a tech-head?
Though given the chance to dump my 'coddled old mum brain' and get stuck in to it, I'd be most happy to be! (I peaked too early I think )
