Best bait for shallow lobster pots?Anyone know the best bait for shallow water lobster pots? I've been told oily herring are good, and mackerel - anyone have any other ideas?

My M8 who is a commercial crabber reckons salted herring and mackerel are good in that order but they should be left salted for a couple of months, also green tripe ...but he thinks there is a law against using that so he says he wouldnt recommend it unless u are in the middle of nowhere and not likely to get caught

I use mackerel baits and get far, far more crab than lobster, the ratio is about 50 to 1 I think.
White fish baits can be good for lobster IIRC.

I've always used mackerel heads that have been left out in the sun all day. Neighbours aren't too chuffed - but there you go.
BTW I was 'browsing' a couple of days ago and came across a new take on the lobster pot. It was a very small cage to put the bait in and about 8 or 10 snares coming from it. The idea is that you dangle this in the water from a boat or harbour wall and as soon as you feel a tug you slowly lift it out, trapping the crabs and enormous lobsters in the snares. Anybody seen/used one? Please tell me I wasn't dreaming and I've just shared my best ever invention with everyone...

Crabs and lobsters ? One prefers fresh bait and the other stinky but I can't recall which.
