Oil tank question ...What does 'bunded' mean in this context? I know tanks have to be 'bunded' but I don't know what it actually is.

Bunded Oil Tank is a tank within a tank. The area surrounding the inner tank is called the bund. These types of oil storage tank are ideal for safley store domestic heating oil.
Bunded oil tanks are used nearly everywhere now as they are the safest form of storage. You will need to use a bunded oil tank if you are storing oil within 10 meters a drain, water course or place of natural beauty. Most insurance companies require you to have a bunded oil tank apposed to a single skin tank. Some locations in the UK the environmental agency may also ask you to install a Bunded Oil Tank.

You can also have an external bund as long as it can hold the full contents of the tank.
To be honest with plastic tanks I dont get why a double skinned bunded tank is any safer than a single one. Its not going to rot / rust & any physical damage that will puncture the skin will puncture both anyway.

Yeah, that's always puzzled me too- I guess they're just designed to fulfill the letter of the law.

Basically, my mum's domestic tank is a metal one and is leaking - so needs replacing ASAP. I said I would look on eBay - but don't really know what I need. So thank you all.

IF its under 2500L (1500L for Agri) & IF your not near any water course you MIGHT not need a bunded one.
Or you could build a "building" round it.

My understanding is that they dont as bunds must hold 110% of the tanks size. Puncture the tank & bund below say 70% of the height & it will still leak as the gap between tank & bund wont hold the 30% from above the leak.
Also as you dont know its leaking if the inner tank splits you then have an unbunded tank again.

Or for that matter if the outer tank is damaged it is back to a single skin without your knowing. It's actually quite difficult to imaging any damage that could be done to the tank which could damge the inner tank sufficiently to leak but the not damage the outer tank. Considered like that the only sensible approach is to have an external bund.
