old cherry trees

ive got a 35ft one on my plot do i prune it ? and what should i do about the seedling trees which have 2" dia trunks , this year the birds got the crop , next year it would be nice to host a site cherry party , especially as everyone has been so welcoming ,as we have the only ones it only seems right to consider orchard land to be held in common , but how to maximise the crop? could i net it without harming the birds(they will have to dine elsewhere ,ok)?is it just a matter of getting up early and picking todays ripe ones? my only experience with cherry trees is trying to beat the birds to feral or municipal ones . i have got some but the birds get most ,which is fair enough but these i need to maximise these for all of us , human and critter .

I honestly don't know. I think Tahir is your best hope, he is a "fruit guru" (said in the least offensive way possible Laughing ) .I did pick up the RHS book of fruit the other week (it was £2.99 in the works) so as soon as i can prise it out of the MIL hands I will look it up for you.
Wouldn't be at all suprised if their attitude was to condem it and then start again though!

thanks a nice start i edited cos i forgot to mention i like birdy critters and i am willing to share a fair amount with them as they plant most of the feral fruit .

35 ft? Leave it, Cherries are very vigorous and also prone to various fungal and bacterial diseases, you're probably going to expose it to greater potential damage than any reward you might get by pruning.

Cherry seedlings will not normally breed true, they'll also be immensely vigorous (like most fruits they're normally grown on rootstocks), but on the plus side obviously they're free, will make lovely trees and might even produce good fruit in a few years time. So it's up to you, if you want to mobve them do it sometime between Novemeber and March.

Netting is the only way to protect your fruits unless it's a bumper year (like this year)
