Once upon a time ... happy ending :)

... there were seven pekin chicks.

Four of them grew up in to cuckoo coloured boys. Two were millefleur boys. One was a millefleur girl. Their owner culled one of the millefleur boys and two of the cuckoos.

The pekins happily pottered around the shed for the next week or so, trying to avoid being beaten up by the barnebars of the same age, who were now about four times their size.

Two days ago, their stupid, STUPID owner forgot to take the bucket of water out of the shed and one of them went for an unscheduled, and fatal, swim.

Yesterday, their stupid, stupid STUPID owner let them sleep in the dog cage where they were hiding from the bigger birds. They were so small, the three of them squeezed out through the bars of the cage and under the shed door.

This morning, there are two left.

Children, out of the two boys and the girl, can you guess which one is missing? Rolling Eyes

Sounds like the owner needs an immediate dose of GIN!

Sounds like my egg autopsy debacle today...where I found that two of the pilgrim eggs, were not actually dead, in shell, at all...

One, only moved after I had broken the inner membrane, so I swore lots, prayed it was ready to pip and breathed sigh of relief as it took a deep breath, and kept going. It is now sort of resting in shell for a bit as lots of yolk still there.
Second one I only cracked the air sac end before feeling it move through the membrane. Phew.

I had candled these two for the last 2 nights as I had doubts about them. Other 4 were defo dead in shell.

I know the exposed one is a girl by the colour of her down and beak. Bunged them back in the incubator and will wait and see.

Happy ending, here - I went out this morning and there she was, perched on a box in the shed! Apart from being slightly confused about where all her friends had got to, she was fine. She travelled down to Ma's on Leo's lap and is now back with her brothers Smile

Oooh, it's a good job you said that, I had completely forgotten you were coming Shocked Embarassed

I have had a broody come off with four cream legbar chicks today - two girls and two boys. Very cheery. And let us not mention the ninety quail eggs in the hatcher ...

How do you keep count? I lost count shortly after 40 . . . Laughing

My quail hatches haven't been that good - lingering around the 50% or 60% mark. So I'm going to be a bit perturbed if they all come off Smile

I need 24 hens myself, hence I set ninety reckoning on 50% hatching and 50% being female.

I can always hatch some more in a week or two, though - they only take 18 days.
