One local summer challenge - the near misses

Anyone nearly manage a local meal bar say one (stupid) ingredient?

This keeps happening to me and I think its to do with the way I shop. As I keep a big store cupboard from Infinity with things like rice, pasta, passatta etc etc I often base meals around our fresh plot things, plus something from there. It doesn't count though does it?

Or I might make a meal of local meat, veggies from plot or farm shop but then spoil it by adding mushrooms ( which won't be local)

I've only managed to find one local cheese and that was a brie and was labelled Cotswold which depending on quite where one defines local as may well actually be out of the area.

An interesting challenge but I'm not winning with it yet.. Any one else?

Rice & Wine, that's where my successes are turned into near misses

Sunday's roast was a loin of our pork, new potatoes and leeks from the garden, carrots and peas from the farm shop, butter from Wrexham, apple sauce from a friend's garden via the freezer. Then I disqualified it by making the gravy with and drinking non-local cider. I could have bought some local cider from the farmers' market on Friday, but it is a little too rough for my liking.

I think the local eating thing is a continuum, just like HFW's idea over at the Other Place. If you normally eat Mother's Pride bread with marg, Branston and New Zealand cheddar, then I would content that a glorious sandwich made from good bread from your local bakery, proper butter and cheese from a dairy and a pot of chutney from the Country Markets stall would qualify.
As many of us are quite a long way down the continuum, we are making it extra difficult for ourselves! But the One Local Summer concept is about changing habits and set shopping methods, not necessarily being totally hair shirt about it.

Agree, that's why it's one meal a week only.

The near misses still represent a massive achievement IMHO and should be something to be proud of.
