OpenVPN versus a Cisco 877?

I shall be setting up a new server machine soon, into which folk will need VPN access. The options for the latter are:-

1. Stick on OpenVPN - the machine will be running Ubuntu 8.10.

2. Use a second-hand Cisco 877 router/ADSL modem with a built-in VPN server.

Any recommendations either way? Anyone direct experience of OpenVPN?

I use OpenVPN for remote access to my main network. It's great, not that I really understand it, but it was not too difficult to get it working for one external laptop. It does get incredibly complicated very quickly though.

OK, ta. I'm no vpn server expert either - expecting it to be complicated too.

I stay clear of VPN.

What do you use instead for remote access?

ETA That's non-techie-user-friendly.

VNC is pretty good.

Probably no help at all, but when I was involved in running a business based on two sites (me on one side of Exmoor, and a small network on the other side), I used two Draytek routers with built in VPN. I used VNC for remote control of workstations, and the routers also had built in VOIP that we used for free phone calls.

I used to love telling people in the office how much toner was left in their laser printer, or moaning when it was out of paper when I was trying to print on it, and hearing the reaction when I took over their desktop Very Happy

I'll use SSH myself for administering the server machine. This thread is about the means by which non-techie colleagues can access the network. I'll read up some more on OpenVPN later.

You must set the ad_network_ads_377.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).
