Orchard conservation placements in France and BelgiumI've been told about some free 2-week placements being run as part of EuCAN, which sound interesting.
9th - 22nd October 2009 Conservation & Traditional Orchard Management, Limburg, Belgium
25th October - 7th November 2009 Conservation & Small Scale Mixed Farms, Aveyron, France.
More details: http://www.orangepippin.com/articles/eucan.aspx
They do have their own website (linked from above) but as far as I can tell, these specific placements are not yet listed on it.

WOW.
Two weeks' paid travel and accomodation, plus the chance to work in the orchards? If I was a wee bit younger, or tie-free....
Great opportunity. Thanks for posting it! (And the placements are now on the website you linked to.)

Just had a closer look - do you think they're actually just after free apple-picking labour? Its a bit early for pruning and a bit late for wildlife. Just right for picking though.
Each group of 13 volunteers should have one over 60, one 'offender' or disadvantaged person, one ethnic minority, one 'carer', one blonde, one gay female with one leg shorter than the . . no I'm making that up, but it's the essence of pc. Didn't say 'one Downsizer'
I really fancy learning about orchards in other countries with the EU footing the bill though - or getting a group of 13 from Belgium coming to mine to pick my apples

Actually I thought it was a bit late for picking, my main concern with the timing was that anyone interested in orchards would almost certainly be otherwise engaged at that time of year. I think with all these things there is an element of PC because of the nature of the funding. However I don't think it is just free labour. I found out about it through a friend at Brogdale, and have corresponded with one of the organisers. If you look at the other projects they carry out, they seem genuine. Think of it has a half-way house between a holiday (where you pay for everything) and working (where you get paid for your time). I think you will also meet an "interesting" range of other workers, and have the experience of living and working in a community in another EU country.
