Overwintering peas...

Hi guys,

I read that I could plant my 'early onward' peas out now for a nice early crop next year. I wondered if they would need any protection over the winter period or if they will be hardy enough to withstand some frost/snow etc?

Thanks Smile

In theory they do benefit from fleece. I say in theory, because I have never managed to grow anything but the most pathetic stunted few specimens from an autumn sowing. Perhaps someone more successful will be along later! Very Happy

We grow overwintering ones whose name I can't recall, in the greenhouse in peat pots until January, then out into our most sheltered spot, end of the month. They survive snow, wind etc here without covers (the covers tend NOT to survive snow, wind etc!), and did pretty well for us this year, although they were only a couple of weeks earlier than the earliest of the 'normal' ones.

We've grown douce provence peas sown in autumn. They did really well and we had lots of peas very early on. We did protect them from the snow by rigging a bit of chickenwire up over them and covering it with a bit of fleece. We grew them in the most sunny part of our alloment. I'd give it a go .

Thanks guys - they have a fairly sheltered spot in the garden so I think it is worth giving them a try. Smile

Ooh I like the sound of that, it will double as a winter green manure too.
Where's the best place to get seed, in case the chap in the market hasn't got any?
Nick

Don't the meeces get them? I'm sure I was told that soaking them in paraffin was the way forward, to put off the leetle meeces.

I'm pretty sure it's the ungerminated seed that they like rather than the actual plants. Pigeons though . . .
Nick

You're right, sorry. I misread the bit about planting out. Embarassed

One year we did have trouble with mice. We assume it was mice anyway. We found all the peas sown, neatly piled up at the end of the row ready for storing elsewhere Smile

I don't think early onward is recommended for Autumn sowing we use Douce Provence, Feltham First and Meteor

And a bit of fleece over them in colder weather won't do them any harm
