Overwintering vegetables questionI have planted out Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Romanescu cauliflowers and was wondering if I need to protect them in any way through winter?

The Purple Sprouting is tough as old boots as long as its not on ground that gets waterlogged for long periods. The cauli may be more tender- if its on free-drainig land it should be ok - but a fleece type cloche might help protect emerging heads in harsh weather.

Bird & rabbit protection might be useful too even if you don't usually have a problem with them at other times of the year.
In the winter wild food is less abundant so tasty brassicas become all the more tempting.

Cheers all.
Bird protection is probably a good idea. I don't think a rabbit has within sniffing distance of this place for centuries though.

Hi Marts,
You'll definitely need netting to keep the pigeons off - lost all my PSB the first year on the allotment because I was too tight to buy any. Didn't make that mistake again!
As for the weather protection, most brassicas are tough as old boots - mine sat quite happily in the ground throughout last winter, getting rained on, frosted and buried under several inches of snow!
Cheers,
Rob.
