Oww- stupid me!I just turned my back on a batch of soap that was boiling away, and set fire to the cooker. Fortunately its a big solid top ex restaraunt cooker, so fairly indestructable, but the fumes were terrible. Anyway, I've scalded my arm (clutching an aloe leaf to it as we speak) and am now faced with having to manually dismantle a 1/2 ton cast iron cooker all by myself to clean the soap off before it dissolves something critical. What a way to spend a saturday afternoon.
At least Gareth will come home to a clean cooker

Well, the cooker is now clean- I could hardly lift a couple of the big panels and I'm no weakling usually. Have to admit I think the fumes did me no good at all, feel decidedly yuk now, but I phoned Gareth at work to confess about torching his kitchen and he made the appropriate sympathetic noises interspersed with sniggering at me for managing to set fire to a solid metal cooker- (I can see the funny side too). Just had a very decadent bath and poured myself a drink, which probably won't really help but it tastes nice.
All this and I still have to get round to making soap- I think it can wait until tomorrow now though.

I think Sally uses a different method because she makes so much and it involves boiling..for us ten-thumbed types I think they recommend the cold processing version, which a lot of people seem to do outdoors and I can see why!

All ok today- did have nightmares a couple of times in the dead of night and scared the cat silly, but just a minor headache today and a nice clean cooker! Off to raid the car boot sale now- always a cure for minor ills and upsets

I'd been meaning to ask you to tell us all about how to make soap by hot processing, but I might've just gone off that idea now!

Hot processing is fine- its the getting distracted part that is dangerous
