Pattern matching software.

Does anybody here know owt about it?
Is there any readily available, or is it still a specialist market for eg fingerprint recognition?

Your question is likely too vague. Some is readily available and free (eg bar codes), some is likely the domain of only the CIA, GCHQ and dpack. And there is tons in between.

Can you narrow your enquiry?

There is a major problem in these parts with theft of stone, particularly from pavements. The police can't do a fat lot because nobody can identify one stone from another... except that they are all entirely unique and individual, just somewhat beyond the human eye and memory to mate up.

I thought that it is probably not such a tricky task for a computer...

i would think the main problem would be taking and collating the photo of each stone for a database.checking the photo of a suspected stolen stone against the database is fairly easy as such software is available but probably quite expensive.

iirc google has a reverse image identification function.ie you show it a photo and it tries to find it among all the images on the web.so if the database was online it might be able to find a particular stone but i suspect the lighting angles etc etc would have to be the same.

as a sideways alternative option, smart water seems a good way to mark a path or wall top in case it gets nicked.i think this is done by some folk.

They have discussed smartwater: apparently it is depressingly expensive... or rather the license to use the signs is expensive, and they need the signs because its effectiveness mainly lies in being deterrent.
