PC help pleaseMy daughter's pc has stopped on us. It keeps giving an error message...
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Windows root \system32\hal.dll.
Not having a clue what that meant I decided to try to reload the XP discs but it's having none of it and won't read them at all. Can anyone help please?

Is System Restore active?

I don't know how to get into it to find system restore. I can get into the set up or the boot device menu but I don't know what to do when I get there.

That doesn't sound good, suggests either the disks scratched or the drive is defective...
Have you access to a CD burner?
Try downloading one of the live linux CDs.
For one it will help you diagnose if the fault is with the drive, and for two, it will give you access to your files, and for three, you might just find it is better than Windows anyway.
Try www.knoppix.org or www.ubuntu.com

Didn't realise you couldn't even get as far as starting up in Safe mode. Bit obvious from you first post I guess, if I'd read it properly!
