Pet hateHi there folks,
I worked for many years as a web developer and web content manager. I have a small problem with the interchangeable usage of the ampersand "&" and the word "and". I know your reading this and thinking what a picky f***er.
I'm finding downsizer to be a wonderful resource... However each time I log on I am confronted by forum names categories...
"Poultry & Livestock"
and then..
"Shooting and trapping for the pot"
Please mods or admin tweak the forum names to use the full word "and" and not the ampersand "&". It looks a lot cleaner on the screen and you have more than enough space.
Sorry for being a pedant.

On the other hand, with a serif font, the ampersand is a thing of beauty.

The ampersands have left the building.

Which would explain why I have spent the last 10 minutes looking for them and wondering if I really was going mad

It wouldn't bother me either way. I agree that the mixture looked messy though.

OK, now what about those errant cases?
Shooting and trapping for the pot (lower case)
Downsizing abroad (lower case)
Everything Else (Initial Caps)
Tsk!

Gervase, you beat me to it

There's a frustrated sub in all of us. I wish mine would bugger off and leave me to my solecisms, though.

I'll put the whole lot into caps in a minute, then you'll be sorry.

Thanks Sean, I knew it would make sense..... I love sites to have clean, workable layouts. Inconsistency just messes with folks heads. In fact (I'm sure I read this somewhere)... people find it easier to read "and" than "&".
Next up - why have you not upgraded phpBB.... But not tonight hey.

Because phpbb3 is a pile of poo.

I don't!
But agree on consistency being important.

I like ampersands...no edit that - I love them, they are a thing of beauty, and when you spend silly numbers of hours doing calligraphy in sixth form (don't ask, it was in Cambridge)...the ampersand becomes elevated to something akin to chinese script *sticks tongue out*
So there

We could throw them both out & put 'n'
|
towerhill

Your right.. they can be beautiful.
But for the majority... are they readable? This is a great site but some folk find simple things complicated. My brother (who as aspergers) finds the ampersand a wall. It simply does not compute.
Also (IMHO) and works better. Especially in a nice sans serif font like this site uses.

Moderator seeks work shocker, Jema, can we elevate his permissions?

Let them introduce themselves.....we all had to

I reckon The Semantics would be a good name for a downsizer band ...

I'm more interested in why Downsizer claims to want to reduce recycling.
|
sean

Because reduction and re-use are better?

Ah. I knew there had to be a logical explanation for "The place to discuss ways of reducing waste and recycling" on the index page.
|
sean

Absolutely. Definitely 100% deliberate and not done in a hurry when we were setting the site up and never corrected at all.

As some one else with a compulsion to sub and proof-read, and a font nerd to boot, I too find this thread amusing
