Petition for Bikes on TrainsAin't as easy as leaving your bike in the guard wagon any more...
In fact, taking a bicycle by train is a complete nightmare; the problems associated with it are well argued in this petition, which I urge people here to sign:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/bikes-on-trains/
The environmental benefit of encouraging people to integrate bike riding with public transport (as opposed to saying 'oh, sod it, its too hard, I'll drive') seem quite clear to me.

Nice idea, wish they go do something similar with buses.

A seat on the train let alone a bike would be nice!
I agree though, the demise of the guards van has killed off bike/train travel.

Hear hear! Signed - now I have the bike I can get to the train station, but it isn't much use if you can't take it on the train

Just signed it.....trains round here do carry bikes but there only seems room for 1 or maybe 2 so not sure what happens if more than that turn up.

Signed it. Not going to hold my breath though.

signed, it would have made my London commuting that I generally did by car in 90 minutes compared to what would have be over two hours by train practically identical time wise.

signing it. I have a fold up bike which goes in a bag so I don't have a problem. but it would be better to get the guard van back.

I've signed it. Not because I want to cycle to the train but because it'd be good not to have to clamber over peoples bikes to get off the train on my commute home (admittedly it only happens infrequently).
Anyone else find it mildly amusing that the keenest cyclist on DS is named after a much less sustainable form of transport?

Don't blame you. I don't believe these No.10 petitions achieve anything much, but I've often been put off taking trips just because its so hard to get a bike on to a train.
Its comical really, you book a ticket for your bike a week in advance, you get told to tell the guard. Train arrives half an hour late, you run up and down looking for the guard, the whistle sounds 30 seconds after the doors open, you dash on to the train, the guard appears ten minutes later and yells at you because 'theres no ******* bike booked on this train', you show him your booking, he then complains that your bike is in the wrong place. And THEN you've got the whole thing all over again at the next station, with another train company that has a different policy, and anyway because your first train was late you've missed your connection and there are already two bikes on that train so you've got to wait for the next one...
Petitioning the PM will likely as not achieve nothing. But then again, its maybe still worth doing.

That's where you're going wrong - you have to call them "Train Managers" now otherwise they get upset

Don't be daft, you'll not get many buses on a train.
