PhishingNot only is it Monday morning and tipping down with rain but I have been 'phished'.
I have received at least 5 e-mails telling me about accounts that are 'deactivated', 'account is blocked', or 'informing me of.....'. I am feeling very edgy about this, I have NOT clicked on any of the requested links and I have NOT given anybody any information re passwords etc. I have contacted my bank and they were very helpful and told me how to report it formally.
Having reported it, by return I received a mail from an organisation called 'Bank Safe Online' http://www.banksafeonline.org.uk/index.html which has some useful information, including samples of dodgy mail sent from high street banks. I found it useful and a bit reassuring but I am still not happy
Is there anything else I can do to make sure my limited funds are safe and stop these wretched mails?

As long as you don't reply to them, then they are no worse than any other unsolicited mail. I get them for banks that I don't even bank with.

I get about 30 phishing message a day.
They are nothing to worry about.
Just follow common sense rules.

I did have a slight chuckle when I was informed that my Coutts account was not accessable

Dont know if it's the same scam but there are some funny ways of dealing with the scammers.
here and here are just a couple. The vicar one had me on the floor it was that funny. It took a while to read though as the african letters took a while to understand.
As with any e-scams, report it as you have done then consign it to the spam bank of your antivirus software

Aside from not depositing funds in an Icelandic bank and not using online banking you should be fairly safe.
Actually, online is safe as long as you haven't been infected with a nasty. Spam filtering will stop most of the emails but not all.

Lately I've noticed a sharp downturn in banking spam in favour of what you might call spanking spam - mostly with a farming theme for some reason . I wondered if it was a sign of the times .
More of it is getting through the spam filter too, despite subject lines which are not suitable for reproduction on a family forum...

I'm still getting banking spam, but also spam with Japanese characters in the sender's name or the thread title [presumably to avoid being identified as spam by mail filters]

I've had a few with Cyrillic script recently, but not Japanese... I think they did go into the span folder though.

The stuff that I have received has come to my work address and we are pretty tight on security. I have never had any before Friday and now appear to be inundated.

Don't bother reporting it, none of the banks are interested in the slightest. To be fair to the banks, there's very little that they can do about it.

I had a run of very genuine looking ones from an internet bank I am with, complete with logo and very similar to genuine emails I receive from them. It's easy to ignore the ones with whom you do not bank but I can see how people get caught out when it comes from "their" bank.

Don't think I've ever had one from a bank I actually have an account with!

this is why I never give my bank my email address - let them write me a paper letter if they want contact.
