picking sweetcornCan anyone tell me how I know when to pick my sweetcorn? My books says the tassles should be brown (they are), and you should stick your fingernail in a kernel to see if the liquid is milky - but if I do that, frankly I can't see anything much. (Maybe that's a clue?!) The corn still looks a rather pale yellow, rather than proper sweetcorn colour - but it's such a palaver peeling back all the green stuff, I'm not sure I should be doing that anyway if it's not ripe yet!

Wait two weeks. The liquid starts clear, goes milky and then pasty. You want milky. Let them swell a bit and benefit from some sun (ha ha).

You can carefully cut a window in the husk. Leave the top attached (more a catflap than a window!) to keep it closed when not in use.
