Pig shortage

I was, on a relatively rare occassion, reading the Yorkshire Post this morning reporting on the 37% increase in sow culling during the first quarter of this year (compared to 2007) could mean a shortage of pigs & pork, and higher prices, particularly for the higher welfare end of the market this summer.

I can relate to that, after a bouyant market for the past few years coupled with low feed costs many people have been cashing in on pig breeding, followed by panic selling when feed prices started to go up. We've stuck to our weaner prices though & turned people away who wanted us to 'give' them pigs, but recently there seems to have been more people enquiring wether we have any & not quibbling over the price.

Rising prices favour beef and lamb farmers

Rising prices favour beef and lamb farmers

WELLINGTON - Rapidly rising meat prices on international markets are boosting hopes that beef and lamb farmers will be paid "significantly better" prices, says a major bank.

"There appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel as international meat prices start to follow other food prices upward,'' Westpac said in its Agribiz newsletter. "We are likely to see much stronger rises in meat prices over the coming years. Lamb prices in the UK are up 34 percent on a year ago while beef prices in the US have hit a new record to be up 21 percent on a year ago,'' the bank said.

Just typical, rising grain price is a great opportunity for farmers to get more out of grass for cattle & sheep, saving the grain for pigs & poultry (and people), and yet the prices are skewed in favour of cattle & sheep... Rolling Eyes

trade in store cattle is pretty strong round here at the moment - i'm reliably informed it is something to do with the strength of the euro (cant quite work that one out - have forgotten all the economics i did at a level).
