Planning neccessary for courses?We are thinking about holding smallholder type courses on some land we are buying. Is it necessary to get any planning permission to run the occasional course? The land would be run as a smallholding in its own right.
I know you'd have to have insurance but I'm hoping planning wouldn't be needed?

My opinion is that as long as the course is ancillary to the smallholding & "de minimis" in nature you would be ok. I am sure some one that knows for sure will be along soon.

it might be safest to approach your council planning dept: they should be helpful and tell you what you can and can't do.

Insurance is essential, but not enough in its own right, H&S Plan is fundamental as is speaking with the executive in your area. ( Insurance wont stop you being sued/prosecuted if some plonker hurts themselves)
Planning should not be needed if, as Richard says, it doesnt become a change of principal use situation.
Planning department might help, or might just entirely confuse matters. I would give them a wide berth unless these courses are potentially going to cause either traffic issues or complaints. Even then you should be ok from a planning perpective.

Thank you for your input. I tend to avoid planners unless absolutely necessary . Thankyou for the H&S alert - I presumed we'd need something on those lines.

We offer courses here and have Public liability, an have now gone on the 4 day first aider course and the H&S at Work level 2.
We have also had to install fire extinguishers, first aid boxes and loads of signs. And this is not our main business. And if you have any children or vulnerable adults you will have to get CRB clearance too.
A fire plan, no smoking policy, & emergency plan are essential.
When we book people we include a disclaimer form.
