This is obviously a very meritorious aim but whats the use of handicapping our farmers against imports from other countrys?
At the moment, a lot of our chicken is imported from even less chicken friendly countrys than the UK and in the unlikely event that our poultry producers were forced to go 'free range' the result would be this.
There would be uproar from the public at the increase in price and then the short fall for the product would simply be taken up by by non UK producers. The net result would be UK farmers out of business and no improvement in the conditions of the chickens.
I'm a chicken lover but most of the public are not. They are all for animal welfare up until the point that it effects their pocket.

I can see your point.I no longer eat chicken because i can't afford free range and don't care for intensive farming

Chicken has become a treat in this house, like my Mum says it used to be when she was a child.
We used to eat a heck of a lot of chicken, years ago, but it really is a case of having a roast chicken every couple of weeks now.

surely if intensive farming was reduced and more free range was available wouldn't it make it cheaper to buy?i'm not a farmer so have no idea

Its not a 100% natural but by far the most free range poultry that you'll get is pheasant. The market for pheasant has fallen through the floor and they can't give it a way. Choose the right time and fill your freezers.

That's about what happens here - and though a free-range roasting chicken might cost a bit - it does do about 3 meals, the roast itself, a risotto/pie/croqettes plus sandwiches plus stock, so not that expensive if you think about it that way.
Free range chicken thighs aren't that dear either.

when i was a child chicken was eat on a sunday approx 3lb or less(can't remember the real quanity) bird fed 6.(with left overs for sandwiches)We always got a bit of breast meat. For years i wondered why my mum and dad got the leg thinking it was more superior Down the rode i discovered i hated chicken legs
