Poorly chicken

Hi, One of our chickens has lost the feathers on her undercarriage - round the egg producing area - and her skin looks a bit mucky and raw. There are three chickens, all about 18 months old, there is no cockeral, they live in a coop with a reasonable run (erm, spans the length and width of three apple trees) and are let out a couple of times a week to wander around. Do you have any ideas as to what is the matter with her?
pookie

Is she broody maybe, they do tend to get bald and hot underneath. Is she hogging the nest box and puffing up her feathers and swearing at you if you try to move her? Wink
Treacodactyl

Have you noticed the other hens pecking at her at all? Have they been wormed recently, has she been broody at all and have any of the other hens lost any feathers?

To start with I'd gently bathe the area to remove the muck and to see if there's any damage. If the other hens are picking on her hopefully someone can suggest something that will put them off.

Take a look at her at night (with a torch) to see if she has any red mites or lice.
Lice will be on her in the daytime to but red mites hide in the woodwork & come out to play at night.
If its mites you will have to give the house a thorough clean & disinfect.
I swear by jeyes fluid but you will need to house them somewhere else till the fumes have dissipated.

Madge

Hi, would that be possible even if there was only one chicken affected out of three? - also, they sleep on a perch.
