Potatoes in pots & enviromeshNeeded space to plant out some nice late autumn brocolli and cauliflower someone gave to me - so i dug/tipped up all my new potatoes and harvested.
A HUGE difference in the quality of potatoes- those that were grown in pots (as opposed to a raised bed) were infinately better even though I have been really rubbish about adding extra soil etc.
Texture/size much much better.
Odd - I thought my bed pots would be much better and only put some in pots as I had run out of space.....
also - got some enviromesh - expensive but it looks absolutely ace and lasts for quite some time apparently.......

I have also had very good results from pots so far (except Mimi - billed as exceptionally heavy cropper but rubbish for me). Tatos in the ground are still to be lifted for a 'compare and contrast'.

This thread inspired me to dig up a couple of plants to see what's going on.
That'll be perfect new potatoes with freshly picked peas and salad with dinner tonight then.. Lots of butter. Hmmmm.

I lurve enviromesh. Mine's on its third year, and although looking a little grubby (wonders, would it go through the washing machine OK?), it's hole-free (meaning holes in the wrong places, not the diddy ones that are meant to be there ), and feels as good as new. Can't even claim to have treated it carefully been out in all weathers, from +40 down to -20!!
It does what it's meant to do ... as long as you're careful to leave enough headroom for the plants and support it properly (including keeping it down to the ground sufficiently for the butterflies / caterpillars to crawl in.)

Hmm i bought several metres of enviromesh, and never bothered to use it, it seems like too much hassle to pin it down, and i doubt whether much water would come through. I've been using butterfly net with good results, the only thing it doesn't stop is the aphids.

Plenty of water gets through, believe me! Even in misty weather, enough gathers on the mesh to drip through. I don't need to water the plants underneath (I don't water my veggie plot at all, apart from tomatoes and peppers ... and newly-planted-out seedlings or seeds).
