powdery mildew on courgettesCan this be a problem if it gets excessive? In the past I've always ignored it as the plants always seem to suffer to some extent but this year I have one plant, and only one plant, that seems to be suffering quite extensively even though it's still fruiting quite happily while the plant next to it with no mildew isn't producing any fruit.

You've got it early. Yes, if it gets to be a serious coverage then it can do for the courgettes, and some years the arrival of a serious mildew attack can herald the end of the season for courgettes.
You'll always get some, and theres an old wives tale style remedy that I've found to be quite effective; dilute milk one part in ten, spray the affected plants with that. Dunno how thats meant to work, but seems quite effective when I've tried it (plants thus sprayed made better recovery than those only sprayed with water).

I just cut the affected leaves off and bin them (council green waste, not my compost bin ). Doesn't seem to bother the plants and I assume that fewer leaves = less water needed.
