Power chain conundrum

So I'm thinking of a new machine, and one of the options has a hefty 980W power supply. This is designed to support a range of increasingly power-consumptive configurations, but is there any way of making an intelligent guess at the load for a middling setup?

I'm guessing not really - and the only way is to measure it in use. Hmm, I may need to upgrade my UPS though. A Belkin Universal 1200VA UPS is probably more than adequate at 670W max output, but I'm not quite comfortable with "probably".

Sounds well over the top, unless you're running lots of top-end graphics cards.

Try this PSU calculator.

Or dry weed in it... as one of my fellow comp sci mates did back in first year, very sneaky i thought, especially as the cops raided his room one night.

I still struggle to see why you need the set up. Just how many virtual machines do you need running at once?

My 2core, 2gb box runs a VM along side the normal desktop pretty well.

BA - I have one of those plug in meters that measures load, you can borrow it if you want.

I have an APC Back UPS RS 1000 for a Dell Precision which has a 1000W PSU, plus I have 4 screens plugged into it as well. We have occasional power cuts here because the local electricity is on pylons and very prone to lightning strikes. I don't know how long the UPS will last, but when the power goes it gives me enough time to save work and closedown safely.

Often, just 1, sometimes 2, but there have been times when more than 2 would have been rather handy. On the new machine I shall probably run 2 as a matter of course, with more as needed.

(If I'm doing something C ish using toolchains specific to the project I'd probably clone a VM specially for the project).

Try running Netbeans on the host, the JRE in at least one VM, and doing DTP and image editing, all at the same time...

Ta - but no need now. My present UPS (which has an iffy switch) will probably cope with the new machine, but possibly not with the others too. I'll use it to assess load, and upgrade the UPS at a later date.

Yes - been looking at APC.
