Power station becomes visitor attraction

Drax Power Station, near Selby, will be open to the public at weekends from Saturday (JUNE 4), to help the public understand more about the electricity production process.

The two-hour tours of the site, which creates eight per cent of the UK's electricity every day, will take visitors around the 850-foot chimney, 12 cooling towers and four giant biomass domes, which are each as tall as The Big One rollercoaster in Blackpool.

As a kid we used to get school trips all over the place including the Wills Cigarette factory

Very good Nick.

I think it would be a good thing if more power stations and other big facilities were able to give guided tours. So few people have any idea how electricity is made, water purified for drinking, logs sawn, or any industrial process. I would find it fascinating, but then I do have unusual interests.

i wonder if they will let folk take core samples from the ash heap?

afaik school trips are often considered too expensive,too difficult to plan,too labour intensive and that they carry a high risk of litigation if the slightest thing goes wrong for many to be organised but it would be a good idea if youngsters actually got to see ,smell, hear, etc etc real places doing things rather than just watching "how it's made" or whatever on telly.

The Ancient Farm near us has loads of school trips; in fact I think it is their main source of income, and the children have a go at quite a lot of things and get quite dirty sometimes. I also helped at a 17th century village where we had school trips, but because there were a lot of them, we mainly talked to them about things and showed them. Not industrial I know, but at least getting children out of the classroom and away from the TV to see it in real life.

when it was being built local knowledge suggested that the pump storage electric stuff was only part of the facility and that a massive amount of computer equipment was installed in other chambers prepared at the same time as the power plant.

if that was the case the same amount of pooter would now probably fit in a small hole.

if you do visit the powerstation a visit to the Vaynol arms in the llanberis pass is advised for a decent beer/meal and as a site of historical interest as it is the place where several himalayan 8k routes were planned .
