I'm going to guess you've got some blocked nozzles.
Have you tried flushing them with windowlene? (There's loads of info on the web - the US equivalent is called "Windex"...)
Most (all?) Epson printheads are non-trivial to change. And for a cheap printer, the cost may approach that of a complete printer.

I'm not too sure about nail varnish remover.
And *touching* (let alone rubbing) the nozzle region is, well... "not advised".
A few drops of Windowlene (though some claim to prefer to use Vodka) into the ink passage - and letting it soak for a while before "head cleaning" seems to be the way to go.
When the machine is switched off, the printhead is "capped" with a bit of sponge. You may be able to cut the power during operation (so the print head is unlocked and 'away' and get access to put another couple of drops of your chosen solvent on the pad...
I've even had results by doing an ordinary head clean, and just leaving it for several hours before repeating. The second one being usually entirely successful.
Anyway - some epson parts suppliers
http://www.unicomp.co.uk/spares3.htm
http://shop.psaspares.co.uk/
http://www.expressterminals.com/sales.asp
All of these handle other manufacturers as well, so they are worth remembering for HP, Oki, Lexmark, Canon, Kyocera and Brother owners.
Good luck...
