Rare Breeds on Shetland

Is anyone on here from Shetland & work with rare breed pigs & poultry ? bashing my head against the wall trying to buy stock up here that doesnt have a bit of cross breeding somewhere along its line.

Welcome on board, I don't know if we have any other Shetlanders on here but you never know.

Hello Angela

I'm in Shetland, but keep myself busy with sheep & cattle. I've got a few "shetland" hens, but they are not a recognised breed. There is a place in the North Isles which grows rare breed pigs, but I think they import weaners from somewhere in Scotland. Keep your eye on the agricultural sales column in the Shetland Times, you will occasionally see poultry there, but I think if you are looking for pigs you should get them up from Scotland.

Aye crofter, im starting to think that my best option would be to bring em up from scotland, very few folks up here register young animals.

Taint going to be easy though, northlink seem to have made sure of that.

Laura do you have contact details for the Kune Kune's ?????

try amy ratter on fetlar...i`ll try and look out number later.

we originally brought up kune kunes here from the original importer into uk..zoe lindop( i think that was her name)

when we worked abroad a couple of years ago, i gave our stock to Amy. she had since imported new boar, pedigree as far as i know.

she certainly gave me blood line info, when i got two sows off her recently.

we will be getting another bloodline boar,if you are interested in swops sometime. however,i not interested in selling pedigree stock,we just love the pigs and the meat produced...also very hardy for shetland.

edited to remove phone number....pm me

Laura your a star !

Go on laugh at me, i just adore kune kune's, if we can get a herd of kune kune started up & we are mid planning to bring up large blacks later this year or spring next year, i shalt be one heck of a happy woman.

I shalt give you a phone !

Other than our Aberdeen Angus herd, we do want to be very rare breed.

Just ordered an incubator so that the kids can have a venture into hatching old breed eggs for us.

Hi- I used to live in Weisdale, but now live in France. Do you live on Fair Isle? I used to visit there as a Podiatrist- loved my visits there!

I now have Kune Kune pigs, I have 6 of them, they are just so lovely! I have contact with other breeders here in France- but none in Shetland. I would recommend Muscovy Ducks too- good eggs and good for meat. Maran hens for nice brown, rich eggs.

Whilst working in Hillswick, I used to get visits from a chap who's hens lay eggs with Blue shells- will try and send you some details if you wish. Also used to buy my eggs from a couple in South Nesting can find out what breed their hens were- .

Hope you find what you are looking for!

I had never heard of kune kune pigs - so i went on a search round the net - they are adorable!!! I have now told OH that my goal is to have enough land to have one - he rolled his eyes and said wasnr a guinea pig enough???!!!

Seriously - I would love to have one, so I will have to get planning. Very Happy

I was born and raised on Orkney ... believe me, it has taken us 500 years to get the Shetlanders to try cross-breeding!! Wink Wink Wink

Only joking guys ...
