Raw Haw HawThere was a guy in the Guardian the other day, claiming that raw hawthorn berries tasted like 'little avocados'.
I thought they were ok cooked but not raw?
So what the truth, are raw haw OK - or is it a plot by those evil liberals to get us all?
cheers

spring buds are ace ,tasty and full of greenery goodness ,bread n cheese is a nice country descriptive name after the flavour of them .
a useful plant in many ways
im not keen on the berries but the buds n flowers are well tasty
the timber works up well into things as well ,old /large hawthorn has a nice grain
some reasonable medicinal uses as well

Hawthorn berries are sort of bland, but I've been munching on them and spitting out the seed for as long as I can remember.
Some of the ormanental ones (imported species most often) have bigger berries on them.

I've found some Haws to be quite nice, fruity and almost succulent (I say 'almost' because this is more of a an exception rather than a rule) in spite of their often somewhat 'mealy' overall texture.
I don't eat the seeds (I believe you shouldn't anyway IRRC), and usually find the skin a little bitter, but if you find a nice big fresh fat one with a good colour, chances are it'll make a halfway decent nibble.
My favourite walking/hiking nibbles at the moment however, have to be the delicious fruity pulp you can squeeze out of the base of a soft rosehip, and hairy bittercress leaves which taste exactly like fresh watercress - well, they do to me, anyway!

cheers all - I used Haw's for the first time last year, in hedgerow jam, but I can see I am going to have to give them a go, in a variety of ways.

Gav, I did a Hawthorn jelly and found that it had hints of vanilla & it was very nice - although it was a pig to get it to set. That made me think it could make a great syrup for Ice Cream too.
I've also got a file of recipes for Hawthorn that I've been collecting over the years. If you fancy trying them let me know & I can email you the contents.
