Depends if the XP disk is an upgrade disk or an OEM disk for a new PC.

Not sure how to read the negative there, but if it is lacking the word upgrade I think you are okay.

That means the full retail non upgrade XP disk.

If you have the upgrade disk then put it in, it will promt you to play a full edition (98, se, me )and you put it in the drive for about 5 seconds, so the machine proves you have a full version, then you put XP upgrade back in.
I did this recently and it works fine.

I notice if you have an OEM version of XP it will probably not work if you upgrade the motherboard on the PC it runs on. It seems the OEM licence is licenced to the bios and chipset of the motherboard.
