Recycling pilesI was thinking if we should be collecting what little foil we use to recycle it rather than land filling it. I have no idea where to take it and if I collect it that'll be another pile of stuff. I've often wondered if it would be better just to have a single refuse collection and then the rubbish is sorted later. As I try to minimise my car use we end up with a large amount of different piles ready to be picked up or disposed of. At the moment have piles for the following:
paper for collection every two weeks.
glass bottles and jars for collection every two weeks.
cans for collection every two weeks.
some plastics to take to my mother as it's not recylced round here.
disposable batteries to take them to the local tip for recycling.
car batteries to take them to the local tip for recycling.
large cardboard and phone for council to collect.
used engine oil and brake fluid to take it to the local tip for recycling.
metal scrap to take them to the local tip for recycling.
old dried up paint tins to take them to the local tip for recycling.
old electrical items to take them to the local tip for recycling.
old clothing for charity shops/recycling banks
unwanted books for charity shops.
And that doesn't include the fruit and veg waste that's composted or the animal bones that are burnt. There's also some piles of stamps waiting to be dealt with.

If it helps, its only by being kept apart that the stuff retains some 'worth'.
Mix it all up, and its probably only fit for incineration and landfill.
Not worth people and machines to disentangle and sort (even without the used engine oil ).

Saving all newsprint and large cardboard boxes for sheet mulching the new allotment beds
Our recycling collection takes practically everything. But the dustment haven't worked out they can take the compostable waste bags I put garden waste in.

How have you ended up with a pile of used car batteries?

In french, just one battery would be a pile...

Absolutely.
And the english meaning of battery as plurality (like a "battery of tests") is why we used (once upon a time) to refer to a battery of cells... but as with text (message) and video (recorder or tape)... demotic english abbreviates!

In my experience the Spanish are very good at recycling and collection points. Most small villages around here have recepticles for paper/cardborad, Glass, Plastics and tetrapacks, with main recycling centres based near small towns collecting eveything that Treacodactyl lists.
In our village we have just 38 residents and have just applied for recycling facilities.

I used to own a car that seemed to have an appetite for them so I have a couple I should take to the tip. I've hung on to them in the hope they could be recharged some how as they were both only a couple of years old when they failed (due to being discharged too much).
Crofter, it would probably cost me the same amount to drive them to somewhere that would pay me for them, so they'll go to the tip for recycling when I get round to it. I also have several meters of lead pipe but I'm hanging onto that myself.

I can understand keeping the liquids out and things like the big car batteries but I do wonder if some method couldn't be found that sorted the waste. After all most people still just throw everything away and even the recycling teams have been known to contaminate the sorted recycling - I've seen them throw bottles into their paper section of their lorry.
Then old dumps could be 'mined' to yield all their recyclables and provide room for stuff that can only be landfilled.

All our recycle goes into one bin.I always wonder why we don't need to separate it

Which leads me nicely to another point. Why are there so many differences between areas as to how and what recycling is collected?
