I have never heard of topping & tailing carrots to make them last longer Surprised
Any idea as to the logic for this?

Since relocating to Spain, we have bought in bulk where possible and shopped locally as well as growing a lot our own produce. Never being one to be wasteful, I do think that less trips to the shops is an effective way to reduce waste and impulse buying. We wasted little before and even less now. Good summary article. Smile

I wonder occasionally how many journalists steal story ideas from the site. though on the positive side we don't seem to get those gimcrack TV companies trolling for people to make monkeys out of on the idiot box any more.

The leafy bits and the root tips are still growing, they're metabolically active and both using and losing water. Take 'em off and the carrot stays hard for longer.

Between you and me, unless they're getting all manky and full of critters, I just leave mine in the ground and pull as required. Managed till April this year Smile

Whenever I have tried to grow carrots, I have just ended up feeding vermin.

There are a few pests that do seem to get at 'em. Which ones do you suffer from?

All of them, I think. Growing veg isn't an option at the moment, when we get moved I'll get the thing done properly.
