Replacement windows/French doors

Just got the price for ours. Shocked Shocked
Nick

500 a window, 1000+ for the doors?
sean

Right on the doors, desperately low on the windows. They're big, and they need arched tops. And we're getting hardwood which bumps it up.
judith

Is this from a specialist window company? We went with a local carpenter who has just put in three oak-framed windows plus a glazed softwood door for £1200.

Do window people have to be certified now?

Peter.

It is easier if they are, but it isn't essential. If they aren't, you have to contact building control, pay around £150 Rolling Eyes and they come round and check after installation.

This is using a local carpenter to make them. Obviously wood's a lot cheaper in Wales, or something. (And we've had several estimates).
judith

Must be all that extra rain we get.
And no you can't borrow our carpenter. He's has another 5 windows and a porch to do before I'm letting him out of my sight!

It's because the windows are smaller, because the rain is heavier, and the doors are smaller because the Welsh are Troglodytes.
