REPSWow - my brain hurts! I have just spent 2 1/2 hourse walking around the smallholding with the REPS rep - and he has been so helpful!
Apart from the fact I need 20 sheep as of yesterday he has advised me as to the soil and grass management, the site and size of the planned orchard and polytunnel, where best to build the stables and chicken sheds....
It was a revelation!
So now I have to put up ten bird boxes and thats it!
I am not sure as to whether to apply for organic status as this is more complex, however he is going to get back on the requirements as he feels the farm is currently essentially organic - I think that means we have weeds - lots of weeds

What is REPS?
REPS (Rural Environment Protection Scheme), is a Scheme designed to reward Farmers for carrying our their farming activities in an environmentally friendly manner and to bring about environmental improvement on existing farms.
The objectives of the Scheme are to:
Establish farming practices and production methods which reflect the increasing concern for conservation, landscape protection and wider environmental problems;
Protect wildlife habitats and endangered species of flora and fauna;
Produce quality food in an extensive and environmentally friendly manner. |
