Ripening tomatoes - without sun?My tomatoes are growing well but I hadn't expected them to be quite as shaded out as they are at the moment. So they get a good dose of sun in the morning and not much else. Will they ripen up or am I going to have to try and move them? (not sure how but it might be either that or lots of green tomato chutney)

I think, can you pick a few, stick 'em in a brown paper bag at the back of a drawer and that ripens 'em?

It's heat that ripens tomatoes, not sunlight in itself; so if your greenhouse is good and warm, they will ripen, or if the weather outside is sufficiently warm for outdoor ones.

You can pick tomatoes green and let them ripen indoors. If you're trying to rush it, stick 'em in a bag with apples, as they give off a lot of ethylene (as do the tomatoes themselves) which is the plant hormone (only gaseous one ) that ripens fruit. It's the same trick to get your bananas ripe. We pick all of our field tomatoes as soon as they begin to blush and let them ripen off the plant. It's the only way to pick large quantities, particularly of heirloom varieties, without damaging them.
