River Cottage on C4

New Autumn/Winter series starting, erm, now!
Bebo

I know, I'm watching it with one eye and surfing with the other.
Rob R

Any good?
Bebo

He's just found some hedgehog mushrooms.
Gill

Never eat Hugh's mushy peas unless you know exactly where they've been.

Laughing
Barefoot Andrew

Entertaining programme as usual - enjoyed it. And I hope they start showing minor cock-ups at the end Very Happy

yummersetter

now I'm looking at Landshare to find City IT folks ready to assuage their carbon guilt by buying fruit trees for my new bit of land and coming to plant them for me.

I can make a good pot of mucky split pea soup too Smile
RichardW

What make is that wood fired range he has got in the dinning room? Its got glass door on the fire but does not look like any of the ones I have seen before.

That's exactly what I was saying, I couldn't see anything on the oven door.
sean

Presumably it's an Esse. Hugh's links.
Fee

I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd like, or as much as I used to enjoy his programmes, not sure why, might just have been my mood.
gardening-girl

After queing behind him in the fish shop at Lyme Regis, and seeing what a grubby person he is, don,t think I,d fancy anything he cooked Shocked Shocked

Oh yes? Are you going to dish the dirt on HFW, or leave it to him? Laughing

I thought it might be but his one didn't seem to have "ESSE" written on the oven door.
welsh veg grower

It was ok, but wonder if he is loosing the basic stuff he used to do which was realistic for folk to give a try in their own back yard. Format is maybe getting a bit repetitive now.

In this weeks episode the oven door seemed to be covered with a fire guard. I guess that was to cover the make.

Having looked at the pics it does look like an Esse Ironheart multifuel range.

How does this land share work. I can see it for veg, short term can change your mind if you need the land back but planting trees seems very long term. Do the planters get visiting/ use rights for the next 20 years or something, what if the land owner suddenly doesnt want trees!?

It was a company that wanted to plant trees for carbon offsetting purposes. This way they don't have to buy the land and the farmer gets lots of trees for free. Win-win (providing you want lots of trees).

You can get "free" trees via a grant its the planting & ancilary bits (tree guards & stake cost more than the trees) that cost.
yummersetter

yes, I know - also the Somerset 'free tree' grants come with conditions that limit your options.

The Landshare website doesn't easily give the info I was looking for, you search by area.
Barefoot Andrew

On again in about 15 mins.

Thank heavens for chasing record/playback...
A.

I'll be having nightmares about that rabbit-skin loincloth for a while Shocked Good programme though, and some of those rabbit recipes looked delicious.

Cheers,
Rob.
Barefoot Andrew

They certainly did.

yeh its an ironheart. he appears to have lots of cookers - an aga. a big chefs rangey thing and the esse ironheart. dya spose he got it free for linking and showing it a lot?
sean

Probably. Or at least a serious discount.
yummersetter

it was a seriously dead bunny evening on Cookery TV last night wasn't it?

The 'have your restaurant run by idiots' programme had bundles of rabbits too.
Gill

I loved last night's programme - the best for a long time. I'd love to have a go at preparing those rabbit pelts and using them to make something furry Smile .
robkb

Anyone see last night's episode? The Chilli and Pumpkin night looked a bit wild, but the Chinese-style shin of beef stew looked absolutely delicious.

Cheers,
Rob.
yummersetter

I saw it late last night, as a recording, but now you mention it, I don't remember anything after the perfect pumpkin pickle phase- might have had a snooze on the sofa perhaps.

I do think Hugh has flashes of being absolutely charming, he's certainly at ease with the camera these days. Mind you, the wine that caused the first result may have something to do with me thinking that Smile

The squid fishing scenes were well filmed in difficult circumstances, though I don't personally believe that squid are actually intended for human consumption. What stunning eyes they have.
Barefoot Andrew

I like the little twist to this series too - the cock-up they show at the end.
A.
stumbling goat

best episode in a long time imho. and tim reminds me of a young hugh lawrie when he was faffing about in the rabbit curry kitchen.

nice to see talking heads other than hfw.

i did wonder if h and that lady were as pickled as the pumpkin mix? Laughing

I am going to have to make some crispy pancakes now Laughing
jema

Didn't make it to the end, it was all kind of "easy viewing" the lift music of the television cookery world, nothing to challenge or offend Neutral
Gervase

Agreed - HFW's 'show' seems to have become the white bread of foodie television.
stumbling goat

after time any cutting edge will become dulled.

what do you suggest that would make it more palatable for your taste?

sg
Gervase

Take it off screen for a few years, accepting that it's run its course. Get dpack and cab jointly to front a wild food programme instead.
