Roe deer

Any tips on deterring them ?

The allotments are 3ft of rabbit netting and we aren`t allowed any higher. Can`t shoot them.

We've got them on our land. I read in an American magazine that you hang cheap, highly scented soap on the fencing and the discriminating deer avoid the area like the plague. Haven't tried it though.

A well known rhododendron nursery in Perthshire collects human hair from the barber shops in Perth, ties them into cloth bags, and pegs them round the perimeter fences of their gardens.

Trip wires & tin cans filled with pebbles.
I've got a lion allergy.

Unfortunately the gait of a deer means it picks it`s legs up, rather than swings it forward as we humans do so that would be a non-starter, may try C-K-R`s tip, but as it`s near human traffic all day I don`t hold out much hope Sad

There's a lot of stuff sold as deer repellent, I believe based on garlic.

According to this report, deer are unlikely to jump into small, confined areas, so lower fencing can be used to create small enclosures e.g. 3mx6m.

I'm going to try stretching plant netting horizontally, with the theory that the deer will not jump on top and even if I lose the edge plants, the ones in the centre might survive.

BTCV Woodlands book recommends tying rags soaked in creosote (my edition is 1998! I guess it's the strong smell that's required, so back to the strong soap!), at entrances and crossing points, at deer head height (1m for roe), or tying brightly coloured plastic strips along the perimeter. Apparently the effect wears off, so use different colours after a few months. Dunno how successful that will be.

Is that why you don't get many Roe deer in the Body Shop?

What about, er, 'staking your territory' by peeing around the edges?
