Rose hip ripening

Am watching with interest the local hedgerows for their rosehips. I tried to pick some the other day, but they were solid, and didn't want to come off the plant.

How do I tell if the rose hips are ripe?

I'm surprised that everything is about 3 weeks earlier this year than previous years.

That doesn't work down here in Kent. The first frost can be long into November by which all the fruit on all the trees has fallen off.

It's usually like that here, we've only picked once but we just waited till they were a bit squishy, try eating it (the red bit) if it's sweet and non astringent then I'd say good to go gz

I pick when they come off easy enough and freeze, to mimic a good frost! MornieG

We have loads of huge rosehips around here and no idea what to do with them apart from syrup....any ideas please.
