Sad day in our corner of the Shopping Arcade

When we opened the shop in 2003, there were six little independent shops up here in our corner. We're the last one standing as of today Sad

Sad Any liklihood of it improving, or have you all been muscled out by big brandnames?

It's not brand names, it's landlords being totally intransigent when it comes to re-negotiating rents. Even though a lot of shops have seen their turnover plummet along with squeezed margins, the landlords will not entertain any rent reduction, or rent free periods.

Consequently the brunt of the downturn is felt by the shops, and if you're an independent, you don't have massive resources to help you through.

Have the shops manged to relocate?

Its not just the small guys who've hit the dust, look at the High Street names that have gone down the pan in the last couple of years. At the moment, my son is working out his next few weeks at Focus before he'll be out of a job.
I'd have thought that in todays climate, tennants would be in the driving seat, rather than the landlords. There are thousands of shops empty and now that that landlords have to pay full rates on empty properties, some good deals should be able to be struck. Lets face it, there's hardly a waiting list of folks waiting to take on empty shops is there? Speaking from experience, if our landlord wasn't being reasonable, we could move our businesses in a jiffy.

Have the shops manged to relocate?

Oh no, all gone out of business Sad

That's a shame. Shops seem to move around all the time here - just got a new T-shirt printing one opened up! They have the school uniform franchise so hopefully they'll do OK.
