School Polytunnel Timeshare Scheme

I have the very beginning of a cunning plan.

We haven't room, either in our garden or on our allotment, for a decent polytunnel.

However, our children's school is just around the corner and has OODLES of space. Just the ticket for a poly tunnel - they could also have a wind turbine to pump the water into it, as they are smack bang on top of a heath where the wind never stops.

I am thinking about offering to finance or part-finance a polytunnel as a bona fide educational resource, but with the proviso that whilst my kids are at the school, we get the veto on what is planted in there, and what happens to the produce subsequently.

Has anyone else got any experience of a polytunnel sharing scheme?

None at all.

However, I do have experience of running the PTA. It would appeal to me, and I'd release funds for it. We've had very good experience with getting kids and parents to help maintain and improve the garden. It fits with a variety of curriculum themes, science, social development, cookery, and even sports, if you build the right bits of thing there.

The school is likely to be slothful and dull at talking to you. The PTA might just be full of enthusiasm.

So maybe thats who I should talk to re events to get teh kiddies involved at the ranch? The headteacher was less than enthusiastic at our meeting and has failed to respond subsequently (I'll get back to you in a couple of weeks...)

Teachers are paid to be there, and it's a job. Some love it, some don't. They are often overworked (for someone who gets 13 weeks holiday), and expected to do far more than they signed up for already.

PTA members, on the other hand, have all volunteered, and continue to do so because they love the school, the kids, and care about the way it is run.

I'm not saying teachers care less, but they do The School as a job, PTA people don't, so they don't see things as extra, unpaid overtime.

Besides, PTAs can spend cash and resources however they want, legally (1), but the school can't.

How convenient. I happen to be the chairman of the PTA.

Must tread carefully in executing my plans for world domination, so as not to appear too self-serving Shocked Laughing

Thank you for these replies!

Then, you should declare an interest if you want to run it in a way that benefits you, and step aside from any voting process. However, if it canbe run so that others can also benefit freely, then run it as a PTA event, they can fund it, the school can help tend it, and you should be able to steer the choice of crops.

Sharing out the produce may be tricky, unless you fund it (partly) yourself. Then, you'd have more say and more benefit.
