ScorzoneraFirst time I've grown it - its done really well but some of it is starting to throw up flower spikes - does this mean its ready to eat? I thought it was a slow growing veg like parsnips - if it isn't ready to eat - what should I do with the flowering spikes ?

It's a biennial so it should be spending this year developing its root for flowering next year. Sthis means it's bolting, if there's a root use it otherwise you've lost it. Alternatively leave it to flower, they're quite pretty and collect the seed.
Did you knick the top with the hoe? They don't like that.

Is it one or two that are bolting or is it the whole lot of them? I often find that a couple will do that, but I leave them be because the flowers are lovely and attract bees.
Is it a good sized row? I'd have a good, leafy plant up and see what its doing. Its a pig to get out of the ground, though

Its just one or two - Very good sized row - its done really really well and has loved being next to the parsnips - I'll leave the ones doing that for the bee's then

Oh, you'll love the flowers too Not as pretty as salsify flowers (which are a lovely shade of purple), but I like them.

Any photos? 'cos I can't find mine amongst the weeds. Do they have long thin leaves?
